I was parked in St Helens town centre one Saturday afternoon when I returned to my car and discovered a flat tyre. I tried to change the wheel but was unable to remove all the wheel nuts, so I contacted my breakdown service for assistance. Unfortunately, I was incorrectly told that my breakdown cover had expired, despite having a three-year extended warranty with breakdown cover valid until February 2027. With Kwik Fit only around 500 yards away, I decided to drive there slowly. The staff managed to remove the wheel nuts and fit my spare, but the tyre had unfortunately been damaged beyond repair. A replacement tyre cost me £262.

Believing my breakdown cover had expired, I also purchased another breakdown policy for £52. I later discovered that my original cover was still valid, leaving me with unnecessary costs, numerous phone calls and around five hours of stress and inconvenience. I have submitted a formal complaint and am seeking reimbursement of the £314 I unnecessarily spent.

The main lesson I have learned is the importance of carrying a portable electric air compressor in the car. I have now bought one for around £15. Had I had it with me at the time, I could potentially have inflated the tyre enough to reach Kwik Fit safely, avoiding much of the hassle and possibly saving around £300.

Hopefully, I will recover the £314, but regardless of the outcome, I now know that a small electric air compressor is an essential item to keep in the car. It could make the difference between a minor inconvenience and an expensive, stressful breakdown.
